Hamtramck Drive Road Reconstruction

The City of Hamtramck submitted the reconstruction of Hamtramck Drive from Joseph Campau east to the City Limits was submitted to the Wayne County Federal Aid Committee for Fiscal Year 2021 STP-U Funding. The project was selected, and the design and environmental review process began. Since the project was receiving federal funds, it would have to be completed per MDOT standards. Hamtramck Drive is part of the road network that encircles the GM Factory Zero development and although this project was underway when planning started to take place. The City of Hamtramck also worked with Wayne County and the City of Detroit to coordinate efforts for the enhancements of the surrounding roadways to ensure continuity with the future projects.

The cost of the project was 1.2 million dollars. This project was funded with funds awarded from the Wayne County Federal Aid Committee, ACT 51 funds, and water funds.

Hennessey Engineers provided design, plan development and construction management for this project. Florence Cement Company was the prime contractor.

Unique Solutions / Challenges:
While the pavement removal operation was ongoing, the contractor encountered reinforced concrete pavement that was not detected by the preliminary pavement investigation. This required coordination between the Contractor, City and MDOT to ensure all guidelines were followed to have the costs included in the project as federally participating. Additionally, the existing aggregate base under the roadway was extremely hard and dense. This required additional testing and research to determine if the material was aggregate or another form of pavement. After investigation and sieve analysis, it was determined the material was 21AA aggregate. Unfortunately, it was contaminated with red brick and timber and could not be incorporated into the project. The contractor used a mill to remove the existing material as traditional methods were proving inefficient.
