Materials Testing Technician
Job Summary
Hennessey Engineers is seeking a full-time Materials Testing Technician to work in our Southgate, MI office. The primary duties of this position include performing sampling and testing of concrete and asphalt consistent with project specifications; maintaining and recording logs of daily work and tests performed; and time and materials expended. This role also may require time in the field providing inspection of construction operations and evaluation of contractors’ work. Applicant must be willing to travel and work in an outdoor environment.
Primary Functions
- Observe, measure, and perform testing on concrete, asphalt, and/or other materials on construction-related project.
- Perform basic laboratory tests on soil and concrete and prepare reports of results.
- Perform maintenance and calibrate / verify status of laboratory testing equipment.
- Compile, analyze, compute, edit, and process lab data and accurately perform various tests in accordance with applicable standards.
- Prepare detailed and complete daily field reports with all relevant test results, measurements, and observations provided.
- Communicate with clients, contractors, and engineering and technician staff regarding construction issues.
- Verify conformance of projects with approved construction documents.
- Communicate in an effective and professional manner with project managers, contractors, and owner/owner’s representatives throughout project.
- Adhere to safety protocols and procedures outlined by Hennessey Engineers.
Minimum Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and sit as needed on project sites. Ability to drive a motor vehicle to reach work sites; ability to maneuver project sites with uneven terrain. Ability to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate. Accommodation may be made for some of these physical demands for otherwise qualified individuals who require and request such accommodation.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds of testing equipment or materials.
Desired Education, Licenses and Certifications
- Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management,
Concrete Technology, or equivalent experience preferred. - High School diploma or equivalent
- Michigan Concrete Technician – Level 1
- MDOT Density Technology Certification
- Radiation Safety Training (HAZMAT)
- Michigan Certified Aggregate Technician
- Valid Driver’s License and a clean driving record
Desired Skills/Experience
- 1 to 2 years of experience performing field or laboratory testing.
- General knowledge of math and science.
- Ability to communicate effectively, follow direction, and work independently.
- Experience utilizing Microsoft Office including Word, Outlook, and Excel is a plus, but not required.
