Construction Inspection Technician
Job Summary
Hennessey Engineers is seeking a full-time Construction Inspection Technician to work out of our Southgate, MI office. The primary duties of this position include field observation and documentation of construction contractors’ activities for conformance with contract requirements. Applicant must be willing to travel and work in an outdoor environment. This is a great opportunity to get experience on a variety of projects and develop a career in field inspection.
Primary Functions
- Prepare thorough inspector’s daily reports (IDRs) detailing the status of the work, including verification of work completed, item postings and materials associations, and jobsite conditions. Work with project engineers on proper IDR procedures and submit IDRs in a timely manner.
- Complete and submit required calculations, sketches, and applicable forms, including but not limited to, Inspectors Daily Report of Concrete Placed, Permit to Place, and Inspector’s Daily Record of Contract Removal Items.
- Verify and document that construction adheres to contract requirements. Communicate with appropriate senior staff on issues of non-compliance.
- Assist with Requests for Information.
- Serve as liaison between the contractor and senior technician or engineer to resolve constructability issues or questions.
- Communicate, as needed and appropriate, with project team and stakeholders including project engineer, senior technician, testing technicians, survey staff, contractors, business owners, and residents.
- Work closely with senior technicians and engineers to verify and document proper execution of project designs.
Minimum Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and sit as needed on project sites. Ability to drive a motor vehicle to reach work sites; ability to maneuver project sites with uneven terrain. Ability to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate. Accommodation may be made for some of these physical demands for otherwise qualified individuals who require and request such accommodation.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds of testing equipment or materials.
Desired Education
Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Concrete Technology, or similar, or equivalent experience.
Desired Skills/Experience
- 2-5+ years’ experience performing inspection for municipal or local agency projects is preferable; experience on MDOT projects is a plus.
- Experience with or knowledge of MDOT documentation requirements is desirable.
- Must have a valid driver’s license with good driving record and be available for occasional travel, long hours, and weekends.
- Ability to communicate effectively, follow direction, and work independently.
- Experience utilizing Microsoft Office including Word, Outlook, and Excel is a plus, but not required.
